One thing I must say about Koreans is that they make amazing films. I learned that little fact after spending time with my dad who is a sci-fi/ foreign film fanatic. I recently watched a really good Korean film last week that I thought was wonderful called The Classic , a movie that parallels the love life of a mother and daughter.
Ji-Hae is the lead character who finds herself stuck in a love triangle among desperate friend Soo-Gyung and her secret crush Sang-Min. She constantly acts as the third wheel on dates and tries to hide her feelings to please her friend. While dealing with the problems of her own love life she reads her mother's old love letters that detail a similar circumstance, but only her mother is trapped between two best friends. The story line shifts between present day(Ji-Hae) and the past (her mother). This may have not been so confusing if the same actress hadn't played both the role of the mother and daughter. This will not become much of a problem until the end when constant scene changes and time gaps occur leaving you wondering whose life you are seeing. The only other problem I had with this movie was its ending. It seemed as if there were two different endings and the director didn't know which one to choice, so they kept them both into the film. This left me confused, thinking that the movie had ended when there was were still a few minutes left.
This film had only two minor problems and I enjoyed watching it. I loved how the film didn't take itself too seriously. It had a good balance between romance and comedy, but never lost the point of the movie. There were a few twists and oh-my-gosh moments in the movie that had me on the edge. A few tear jerking moments are laced within the film also. I loved the movie, the plot, and and the characters, especially Tae-Soo who surprised me throughout the movie and brought in a lot of the comedy. The Classic was absolutely delightful and entertaining and hopefully American writers will look towards this film for inspiration. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes foreign films and romance movies. It gets a 4.5 out of 5. I'm thinking of watching another film called Millionaire's First Love later, but if you want another movie like this, I recommend watching Baby and I (pictured at left), another Korean film that I say is by far my favorite. It reminds a bit of Looks Who's Talking Now, but it's way cuter and sweeter.
